Role Models: Raunchy Daycare Flick Brings Warm Message. How Precious!

by Andrew Bates - A&SB Contributor

The more I go to the movies, the more I’m seeing a very successful genre expand itself - the raunchy 20 something comedy with a good underlying message. We’ve seen it in films like Knocked Up (commitment for the benefit of others) Superbad (friendship through the craziest and hardest times) and more recently Zac And Miri Make A Porno (a love story disguised in hilarious crude behavior). While certainly less crude than the aforementioned films, Role Models brings the same positive message to the table through a hilarious onslaught of potty mouthed tomfoolery.

Role Models involves two co-workers Danny (Paul Rudd) and Wheeler (Sean William Scott) who get in trouble with the law after an anti-drugs speech at an elementary school goes awry. When Danny goes to his girlfriend for help (always attractive Elizabeth Banks) she works her magic on the judge and instead of jail time, Danny and Wheeler are sentenced to 150 hours of community service with needy children.

Rudd and Scott shine throughout with plenty of quotable material to shake a stick at, and their “littles” (McLovin aka Christopher Mintz-Plasse and Bobb’e J. Thompson) are just as hilarious to watch. Wheeler is assigned Thomspon’s character, demon-like Ronnie Shields, who provides a bucket full of laughs and steals the show in many scenes during Role Models. Rudd’s Danny takes on the geek-infested world of Mintz-Plasse’s character Augie Farks, a boy with a love for the loss of reality through his role-playing game LAIRE.

Whilst hilarity ensues as one would imagine, Wheeler and Danny learn valuable lessons about acceptance, responsibility and humility throughout Role Models. There’s nothing new here, but one thing can be expected from Role Models: It’s an exemplary 90 minutes of well acted raunchy humor that is sure to please fans of the genre.
