My task was to design a modification of the existing Times used in Lidové Noviny newspaper. The assignment, which was on the whole wisely formulated, was to design a typeface which would enable “a smooth flow of information in the reader’s eye”, therefore a typeface without any artistic ambitions, from which everything which obstructs legibility would be eliminated.

Your Weekly Free Font: Chunk
Okay, I know what you’re thinking – “Wow, these guys must really love The League of Moveable Type!”.
And we do… but honestly, while trying to decide on this weeks free font, I didn’t even think about Jason’s selection of League Gothic last week (and by last week I, of course, mean last November). Fact is, there are so many free fonts available, but so few that are of decent quality. So my brain just picked something from The League of Moveable Type by default.
Your Weekly Free Font: CHUNK.
This fat serif font is perfect for a variety of uses, especially creating vintage, letter pressed style, posters and display images. Just distress the text a little and you are good to go. Plus, when I read the name, it makes me think of this, so… win win, right?
Chunk is an ultra-bold slab serif typeface that is reminiscent of old American Western woodcuts, broadsides, and newspaper headlines. Used mainly for display, the fat block lettering is unreserved yet refined for contemporary use.

Your Weekly Free Font: League Gothic
During our day job we are constantly on the hunt for inspiration. One of those ways we do this is by tapping into the incredible amount of design resources throughout the internet and keeping our finger on the pulse of what’s new… or what’s old and just plain awesome that we never noticed before. Either way, we spend a good amount of time seeking these elements out and this is our chance to share with you some of our favorites that are free of charge.
Your Weekly Free Font: LEAGUE GOTHIC
This bold, sans-serif font is beautifully designed and if used properly can really make an impact. League Gothic was created by The League of Moveable Type – a great resource for well designed Open Type fonts. I’d spend some time trying to explain to you the font and its history (especially our history with Alternate Gothic), but TLOMT state it best on their site:
League Gothic is a revival of an old classic, and one of our favorite typefaces, Alternate Gothic No.1. It was originally designed by Morris Fuller Benton for the American Type Founders Company (ATF) in 1903. The company went bankrupt in 1993. And since the original typeface was created before 1923, the typeface is in the public domain.
We decided to make our own version, and contribute it to the Open Source Type Movement. It’s free, not only in price, but in freedom.

Your New Favorite Artist: Dan McCarthy
So if you’ve been to my apartment you’ve seen Dan McCarthy’s prints hanging all over my walls. It’s not that I’m obsessed, it’s just that I’ve finally found an artist whose pieces make me say “I want that” every time I see a new one. Also, each screen print is under $50, which is incredibly cheap… A current theme runs through McCarthy’s well-crafted prints which is that there is something bigger than all of us. Even if it’s simply our untapped imaginations, he leaves you breathless during your journey of trying to figure it all out.
